Mongoose Switchback: choose the variant first
Our verdict: Consider the Switchback family for an entry into trail riding, then compare the actual frame size and equipment of the listing.
Pros: The current Comp 29in combines front suspension with disc brakes and a geared drivetrain.
Trade-offs: Switchback versions differ. The specifications below apply to the current Comp 29in, not every used Switchback. We have not ridden or tested it.
Search on eBayWhich Switchback is this?
Mongoose uses Switchback across several bicycles. This review uses the manufacturer’s current Switchback Comp 29in as its reference; Sport, Expert and older Comp versions can have different equipment. Our marketplace button opens a model-family search rather than a single guaranteed specification.
Specifications from Mongoose
- Tectonic T1 aluminium hardtail frame with internal cable routing.
- 29-inch wheels and a suspension fork with 100 mm travel.
- 2x7 drivetrain with Shimano derailleur and Microshift shifters.
- Mechanical disc brakes and 2.25-inch-wide tyres.

Who does it suit?
Our assessment is that the Comp is worth comparing for someone choosing a first trail-focused hardtail and willing to check fit and setup carefully. The published equipment gives you a starting point for comparing listings; it does not tell us how a particular used bike has been maintained.
If you want hydraulic brakes or rear suspension, keep comparing other models. A different wheel size or equipment package can matter more than a similar-looking frame or paint colour.
Before choosing a listing
- Ask for the exact year, variant and frame size.
- Compare the actual brake and drivetrain parts with the seller’s description.
- Check frame, wheel and fork condition and allow for assembly or servicing.
- Confirm the delivery arrangement and return terms.
